What Career Opportunities Are There For An Economist? How To Become An Economist?

I am a student from India studying Masters of Professional Accounting in Sydney. I have great interest in Economics and want to pursue career in economics after my Post Graduation. So what course would prove to be best for me and what career opportunities I would be having after completion of my studies (In Australia as well as India) ? It would be great if I can find some scholarship or financial help as i come from middle-class background.

After completing your degree, go to India. Try to get into MBA at IIM, ISB or any other institution. Job prospect wise, you can get better jobs in India. India has a bigger market and is on the rise. More companies, more businesses, more banks. India has a big demand for economists. There are so many banks, to work as an economist for or foreign companies like PricewaterhouseCoopers. The market is much bigger in India and India is recession free. Australia is going to be hit by recession and Australia will never grow beyond 4% GDP.
Look at their 3Q growth rate, it’s shrinked down to 0.1%. Soon you will see negative growth, consumer confidence is dead low. What’s the government doing? Just slashing off rates, market is dead and very small.
Trust me, I have lived in Australia for 16 years of my life. In India you have a brighter future and it will help with your middle class background. It is very hard to get into your desired job in Australia. Especially for foreign students.
Good Luck with whatever you do.

    Hi!
Let me start off by saying you’ve made a very wise decision in wanting to study economics! It is very useful in everyday life, and also a blast to study :)
I am currently finishing my economics major, and came up with a few different jobs for you:
    Economist: For Banks
    Economist: For Government
    Portfolio Manager: National Australia Bank
    Economist: Statistics Australia
    Financial Analyst
    Management Consultant
    Manager of Customer Service
    Full Underwriter: Export Development
    Teacher
Many also continue to pursue MBA’s, law degrees…. As for me, I will be doing my masters of taxation after this economic degree. I have been told that it will be very good for me, as many tax experts are people coming from the accounting stream. With an economic background comes a different perspective which few people in this field have. Since you will be graduating in accounting yourself, taxation might interest you.
I am from Canada and can’t really give you the name of Banks or anything in your area, but what I did give you were job placements most likely available in your country as well.
    Good luck, and have fun!!
