Should I Take Advantage Of This Opportunity, Or Is It Just Not Worth The Trouble?

I’m an American, and I’m currently studying abroad in Australia. My family is pretty much paying for my room and board here, and I paid for my school tuition through scholarships i earned. I have been saving money like crazy for the last year and a half for this adventure, mainly so that I could afford to travel. I’ve been here a month so far and I’ve made many great friends, but most of them are locals so they really don’t have much interest in traveling. I really want to see Fiji, New Zealand, and the Great Barrier Reef while I’m in this part of the world, but I just can’t seem to find anyone to go with. All my friends just aren’t that interested, and the few other exchange students here I met who I’d think would want to travel simply cannot afford it. I really want to see Fiji, New Zealand, and The Great Barrier Reef, but I just really don’t want to go alone. I would just hate to fly back home in a few months and have my family ask me “so where have you traveled.. and with who” and for me to say, “Oh I went here, here, and here, but I did it all alone” because, come on, let’s face it, that’s really lame. Should I just keep all the money I’ve saved that I hoped to spend on taking adventures around Australia for some other time in my life, or should I just suck it up and do the traveling but alone. I know I would feel kinda dissapointed in myself coming home knowing I stayed in the same place the whole time… I just don’t know what I should do?? I’ve thought about this a lot and I truly don’t know, so please don’t give me answers like “only you can answer this question” because at this point I really need other people’s opinion. What would you do if you were in my shoes? THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would travel on my own. Sometimes you have to go your own way for awhile and then when I found someone special…I would travel with them. Make sure that whoever you find has the same goals and passions that you do in life so you can enjoy things together.
btw, who cares if you travel on your own? As long as you use your brain, and don’t do anything stupid, its perfectly fine. People have done it and continue to do it. I think its great that you love to travel and I hope that you have fun on your travels. Lots of people have traveled on their own, you wouldn’t be the first one. Have fun.

You are obviously one of the more intelligent Americans because you want to see a world outside of your door step.
I would do it – you can make friends on the way as you travel if your a normal nice guy. If your a scary freak don’t be offended if people turn you away when you try and tag along.
But overall, do it – you will love the experience. Why not jump on a “gap year” tour group if your not comfy with just your own company. I travelled across Europe by myself and had a lovely time – ok I was going from A to B for a reason however I enjoyed taking things in at my own pace.
Who cares what anyone else thinks whether you travelled with 5 people, 50 people or by yourself?
Do it. You never know if you’ll get the chance to go again. On the other hand, Fiji etc will always be there – its whether you’ll have another chance to do it.

    Traveling.
    That’s nice!
Okay… I think you should go if you’re impatient.
Seriously… some sights may be gone if you wait too long. HOWEVER, YOU’LL BE DARN LONELY.
BUT I seriously recommend you to wait awhile. Get a job, feel secure. Then you can invite your colleagues who will then have the money to vacation with you to go with you. PLUS… you’ll have more money to spend in those vacation places longer and you’ll have more souvenirs to show off too!

    If I were you…
I would bring the idea of the trip to the group and see who all is in. You never know, you may make a friend.
I would prefer to go with someone who is similarly situated as me, meaning, in the program. That way you can trust them to some extent. But also, having a local along always helps with canvassing the terrain and also to stop vendors from trying to make an extra buck off a tourist who doesn’t know any better.
Lastly, if your pockets can stand it, if you have to, pay for a friends trip with you.
But i certainly would not let those issues stop me from going. ITs not everyday you hop over to Australia. But i’m an adventurous person. All else fails i’m going by myself and no one will tell me differently.

Traveling abroad is a HUGE accomplishment in and of itself. I say go- even if alone. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and you will kick yourself if you don’t go! Besides, going on excursions by yourself will give you the opportunity to self reflect. I am sure you will learn a lot about yourself if you were to go, as intimidating as it seems. You will meet interesting people and have memories to share with your children-when that time comes.
Don’t hesitate! Just go and enjoy yourself!
    Happy Travels.

You could ask your local friends to guide you as you reach their hometown. It’s not wrong to travel alone. If you truly saves the money for traveling, use it for that reason only. Though if you really don’t want to be alone, find someone to join you then.
