I got a letter in the mail stating that I was invited to travel and study in Australia in the summer of 2010 for the People to People Student Ambassador program. Though the price to do this ranges from $5,000-$8,000, and my question is it actually worth it? I cannot pay this, though if i raised enough money why should I not just keep it for college? If anyone has any experiences with this program please let me know if you believe it is worth it, and describe your experience. Also if there are any scholarships available for this program?

you should go if you can. if you go to the program, it opens a lot of doors. many colleges are looking for people who are more aware of the world. chances are, some college will offer you a scholarship to their school that would make up for the money you spent abroad.
Do it. It’s definitely worth it.I just came back from the Europe trip a few days ago and I loved it. You get the chance to experience something new and make a lot of new friends. Though it may seem like such a short time, I got the chance to become really close with some of the other delegates. We even got the chance to meet some delegations from other states! Don’t worry about the price too much. You’ve got plenty of time to fundraise. The leaders will probably pitch some ideas of fundraising at one of the meetings as soon as you’re accepted. I’m pretty sure there are some scholarships available, but I don’t know too much about them. I’m sure there’s some information about that on the People to People web site. I’m planning on going to the Australia trip next year. Hope to see you there! (=
You aren’t special. P2P sends out thousands of these letters around this time of year. Keep an eye out on this site and you’ll see bunches of questions about them (no one bothers to do a search — sigh).
P2P is a glorified tourist trip. It is NOT an exchange. My personal opinion is you’d be much better served spending that money going on a semester, or better yet year, exchange with an organization such as AFS, YFU or Rotary. That price would just about pay for it.
A true exchange is worth a lot in preferred college admissions and sometimes scholarships. Also, the language you would learn is worth money when you enter the work force.
