Some states, such as Illinois, have programs administered by their public health departments which provide money for nursing education. In Illinois it is a “loan” which must be repaid if the student does not work as a nurse in Illinois following graduation — but it can be any nursing job in any part of the state. For each year the recipient works as a nurse in the state, a year of the loan is forgiven, so it is possible in Illinois for a nursing student to go through school at no cost and never need to pay any of it back. (The only wrinkle is that the loan forgiveness amount IS considered income subject to taxation — just like any other loan forgiveness is income.) Oh — and people who take the loan, don’t work in Illinois as nurses, and don’t pay it back are hauled into court by the Attorney General, and when they lose they have to pay back the value of the loan plus interest and (sometimes depending on the judge) attorney fees. Default can also result in the loss of the license to practice nursing.

Ask about W.I.A at your local unemployment office, if your income is low enough it covers books tuition even gas and food
