Masters are FEE PAYING degrees i.e. there are no scholarships, no HECS (pay back scheme for Australians), no AUSTUDY (study grant - but only for Australians). Its considered a professional degree that you get while you are working for a company so the fees are the highest of all degrees and you have to pay for them up front.
PhD scholarships are competitive and assigned in November/December. You need a first class honours to be considered and even then you have to have already found a supervisor willing to take you on.

I'm sure we have the same or similar courses, but what happens when our government gives you a study loan (HECS we call it) and then you leave the country, there would be no way of getting that debt back of you, or marking your credit rating badly.
In saying that, I've never been to university and I've never been a foreign student at an australian university, so i don't have a clue what i'm talking about.... but i filled in 2 minutes of my boredom
