CA Scholarships : Education Specialist Mild/Moderate, Moderate/Severe Disabilities Internships
With Optional, Specialized Preparation for Teachers of Early Childhood Special Education
Program Purpose
The purpose of the CSU, Chico special education internship is to improve the quality of rural special education services to pupils and their families. The program is a partnership of Northeastern California public schools, federal and state governments, and the University.

- Ongoing supervision and assistance from support providers and faculty
- 10 release days per year provided by your employer for course attendance
- 15 units apply to Master’s Degree in Education
School Districts Commitment
Provide 10 release days annually for classes and intensive support and supervision.

Application Eligibility
- Documented success in teaching. Preference to currently employed, successful general education teachers, paraprofessionals, members of traditionally under-represented groups
- CBEST
- Valid basic California credential, OR, if no basic credential, BA or BS with verification of subject matter competency, substantial experience in classrooms, U.S. Constitution requirement
- 2.75 GPA last 60 semester units or 2.67 GPA overall
- Employed by participating school district at least half time or pursuing a special education teaching position
Program Classes
The internship program is typically a two-year program that includes on-campus summer session courses. Candidates who begin in the spring semester may need to add one additional semester to their program. Most classes meet on monthly release days (including one Saturday each semester) or begin after the school day on the Web and are real-time, video-streamed courses.
Competencies for resource specialists are included in this program. If you are interested in adding an early childhood certificate to your specialist credential, please seek individual advisement regarding the schedule. RICA examination may be required if this is your first credential. You have a maximum of five years and a minimum of two years to complete the Professional Level II Education Specialist credential after you receive the Preliminary Level I credential.
